It is interesting that words that describe human anatomy are also used to describe vases. The pedestal of a vase is referred to as the foot, the largest part of the vase above the foot is referred to as the body. Vases bodies can be wide or round and bulbous or slender. Positioned on top of the body is the neck of the vase. The necks are usually slender and long. At the end of the neck is a rim known as the lip. Such terms have been retained to date and are used to describe wholesale glass vases.

Vases as old as 5,000 years have been excavated by archeologists.  Discoveries have been made of Ancient Egyptian vases, Greek vases and Erutsian vases.   Modern design of vases borrows heavily from the shapes and styles used by the Greeks. The 12 main Greek designs, each with its own purpose and meaning, include Pyxis, Psykter, Oinochoe, Lekythos Gamikos, Lebes, Kylix, Krater, Kantharos, Hydra, aryballos, Amphora and Alabastron. Pyxis, for instance, was used by women to hold jewelry and cosmetic. It was branded with a red image of a young bride on a journey to the house of her new husband. Psykter was made with a bulbous body and a short neck placed on top of a high cylindrical foot. Psykter and krater were used to chill wine by placing the wine in krater and ice in psykter.

Italian glass blowers created vases made of pure crystals in the late 15th Century. George Ravenscroft, an English glass maker, discovered the use of lead crystal to make glasses in 1674 while looking for an alternative material to replace a Venetian crystal made from quartz sand and potash. He replaced potash with lead oxide and made it possible to produce crystal vases that refracted light better and looked more transparent and brilliant. Such beautiful vases can be found in wholesale glass vases.
